Pope Francis recalls cost of war with WWII site visits

NETTUNO, Italy –  Pope Francis is underlining the price of war, visiting an American military cemetery and the site of a Nazi massacre in Rome.
Francis said the visits Thursday, which mark All Souls' Day, show that "wars produce nothing more than cemeteries and death. That is why I wanted to give this sign in a moment when our humanity seems not to have learned the lesson, or doesn't want to learn it."
The pope will first say Mass in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, where 7,680 American war dead who helped liberate southern and central Italy during World War II are buried and 3,095 missing are commemorated.
From there, the pope travels to the Ardeatine Caves, the site of one of the worst massacres of Nazi-occupied Rome.

Boeing 737: Australia joins Singapore in barring Max planes

SilkAir's six Max 8 aircraft will remain grounded for now Malaysia is the latest country to temporarily ban Boeing 737 Max aircraft from flying to and from the country, joining Singapore, China and Australia. The decision comes after  an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing Max 8 crashed on Sunday, killing 157 people on board . It was the second fatal accident involving that model in less than five months. Singapore's Changi Airport is the world's sixth busiest and a major hub connecting Asia to Europe and the US. But only a handful of airlines operate Max aircraft in and out of the country. No Australian airlines operate the Boeing 737 Max, and only two foreign airlines - SilkAir and Fiji Airways - fly the model into the country. Shane Carmody, who is in charge of aviation safety at Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority, said the suspension would remain in place while the organisation awaited "for more information to review the safety risks". ...

Google diversity head removed over anti-Semitic blog post

  Google has removed its head of diversity over a 2007 blog post that said Jewish people had "an insatiable appetite for war and killing". In a post about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that resurfaced this week, Kamau Bobb also claimed Jewish people had an "insensitivity" to suffering. The post has now been deleted. On Thursday, a spokesperson for Google told the BBC that Mr Bobb would "no longer be part of our diversity team going forward". "We unequivocally condemn the past writings by a member of our diversity team that are causing deep offence and pain to members of our Jewish community," they said. Suffolk Coastal District Council will investigate the pond on Ed Sheeran's estate Ed Sheeran's Suffolk estate will be inspected by council officials to make sure his pond is there for wildlife and not "a wild lifestyle". Some neighbours had been worried the pond would be used for swimming and watersports, which are against planning permission. Suffolk Coastal District Council is to investigate to make sure the rules are being followed. Other neighbours said they had "no problem with Ed Sheeran whatsoever". The wildlife pond, featuring a jetty, steps and sheds, was installed after being granted planning permission in January 2017.
