Officers down: three cops shot in Palm Springs
TWO US police officers were killed and one injured after a shooting in Palm Springs, California.
“Today Palm Springs lost two brave officers,” Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference, his voice shaking with emotion, as reported by The Desert Sun newspaper.“I am awake in a nightmare right now.”
The police officers killed were Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gilbert “Gil” Vega. Reyes said Vega was a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday. Zerebny is the mother of a 4-month-old baby, he said.

Palm Springs police sergeant William Hutchinson said an individual opened fire on the officers who were responding to a family disturbance call.
Hutchinson said police don’t have a suspect in custody. Dozens of law enforcement officers are now involved in a search for the shooter, The Desert Sun newspaper reported.
An “active scene” was unfolding near the intersection of North Sunrise Way and East Racquet Club Road, police said.
