Officers down: three cops shot in Palm Springs

TWO US police officers were killed and one injured after a shooting in Palm Springs, California.

“Today Palm Springs lost two brave officers,” Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference, his voice shaking with emotion, as reported by The Desert Sun newspaper.
“I am awake in a nightmare right now.”
The police officers killed were Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gilbert “Gil” Vega. Reyes said Vega was a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday. Zerebny is the mother of a 4-month-old baby, he said.
The officers were at the door of a house when the shooting began, Reyes said.
“It was a simple family disturbance and he elected to open fire,” Reyes said.
The Desert Sun newspaper reported that Palm Springs Mayor Rob Moon, while walking out of the emergency room where the officers were taken, said, “It’s probably the worst day of my life.”
Palm Springs police sergeant William Hutchinson said an individual opened fire on the officers who were responding to a family disturbance call.
Hutchinson said police don’t have a suspect in custody. Dozens of law enforcement officers are now involved in a search for the shooter, The Desert Sun newspaper reported.
An “active scene” was unfolding near the intersection of North Sunrise Way and East Racquet Club Road, police said.
